Filling the Gaps – What Underserved Youth Really Need from Their Communities

When we talk about underserved youth, it’s easy to default to statistics. But behind every number is a story—a young person navigating life without essential resources, safe relationships, or a sense of belonging. At Growv, we call it "filling the gaps." These are the missing links in their support systems that prevent them from thriving.

The Reality of the Gaps:

  • According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. live below the poverty line.

  • A 2022 CDC report found that nearly 40% of teens reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless.

  • Homelessness, food insecurity, lack of access to mental health services, and inadequate school supplies are all common challenges.

What They Really Need:

  • Stable Mentorship – Youth are 55% more likely to attend college if they have a mentor (MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership).

  • Access to Essentials – Food, clothing, hygiene products, and school supplies directly impact self-esteem and school performance.

  • Safe Spaces & Emotional Support – Environments where youth feel safe to express themselves, connect, and grow.

The Growv Approach: We believe that when these foundational needs are met, youth have a real chance to flourish. That’s why we:

  • Provide school supplies, clothing, and meals through local drives and donations

  • Match youth with mentors who understand and uplift

  • Create youth-led spaces where connection and expression are nurtured
